This event brought together female leaders in technology for an enriching week-long journey across New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. The mission aimed to explore expansion opportunities and foster connections with industry experts and gave attendees the chance to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration, the world’s largest gathering of women and non-binary technologists.
The Department for Business and Trade, in collaboration with the British Consulate in New York, hosted a welcome reception in New York City for the group. Participants had the opportunity to meet key business contacts, investors, and other founders within the tech communities of NYC and Philadelphia. This mission, which has been running for seven years now, highlights the Department for Business and Trade’s commitment to supporting women in tech as well as UK companies as they expand into new markets.
At the Grace Hopper Celebration, there were insightful talks and sessions specifically about and for women, including one-on-one interactions and engaging panel discussions. The event attracted a diverse crowd, with attendees ranging from students eager to enter the tech industry to mid-level managers seeking advice, and senior representatives sharing their expertise. Some of Mahreen’s favourite sessions included ‘How to Not Cry at Work’, ‘How to Network’, and an eye-opening session on gender bias within AI.
“I’m really glad missions like this exist. It was eye-opening to see how many improvements can still be made for women in the tech industry. These trips help put women in front of the right people, which doesn’t happen often enough in tech. It was wonderful to experience that kind of support.” – Mahreen Jamil, CFO
Mahreen Jamil was proud to represent SEP2 at such an event and is grateful for the opportunity to engage with industry leaders, explore cutting-edge technologies, and participate in collaborative discussions with peers. The insights gained from this experience will be invaluable for the growth of SEP2, and Mahreen looks forward to utilising these new connections and insights to drive future success.
